Kuzmenko scores in debut as Flames beat Bruins

Jonathan Huberdeau had a goal and two assists, Nazem Kadri had three assists and Jacob Markstrom made 21 saves for Calgary (23-22-5).

“A pack of hyenas can kill a lion,” Kadri said. “So that's the kind of mentality we need, which is to play as a team and everybody goes inside. When we do that, we can achieve great things.”

Pavel Zacha scored and Jeremy Swayman made 25 saves for Boston, which has won seven of its previous eight games (31-10-9).

“I didn't think we were good,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. “Our effort was poor. As an employee, it's obvious that you look inward and look at our training. You always think that your preparation as a coach was good, but it was clearly not enough. A lot of mental mistakes, a lot of physical mistakes, it's a lack of real good preparation. Individual and collective”.

It was each team's first game since the NHL All-Star break, with both teams last playing 10 days ago.

Kuzmenko gave the Flames a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 4:20 of the first period, ending Huberdeau's run down the ice. The goal came after Markstrom stopped Bruins forward Charlie Coyle on a short-handed layup.

“It's definitely a turning point for me,” Calgary coach Ryan Huska said. “Then our power play got two (goals). … This is a real positive for us, because it was also dangerous that we could not score at the end of the game. It looked good, and that's what we want to see.”

Connor Zary cut the crease and scored around Swayman to make it 2-0 at 13:01.
