Imam of Montreal warned against providing independent medical care to Muslim women West Island News

In a sermon shared online by Montreal imam Adil Charkaoui, he told his followers that Muslim women should be denied medical care if it does not comply with Sharia law. Sharia law is the Islamic framework of laws used to varying degrees in Muslim countries.

In a video of one of his sermons posted on the mosque's website and published by La Presse, he said his followers are forbidden from receiving medical care that does not comply with Sharia rules. He specifically referred to the Sharia rule, which prohibits Muslim women from showing any part of their bodies to members of the opposite sex. “Male doctors and nurses and other medical professionals are not allowed to treat a woman unless a female doctor is present,” he said. Charkawi added another obstacle to women's access to medical care: “A doctor should treat only what he needs to treat or see, and a man from the family should accompany the woman so that there is no chance of going off the rails.”
