Calgary police are investigating a stolen vehicle crash

The closure of the southbound Deerfoot Trail and Stoney Trail caused major problems for commuters Tuesday morning.

According to police, CityNews officers were called to the accident around 1 a.m. and were shocked to learn the car had been stolen.

They say a 2008 Chevrolet Uplander driven by a 43-year-old man was traveling southbound on Deerfoot Trail SE when he turned onto Stoney Trail SE.

The southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail were closed at Stoney Trail until approximately 9:30 a.m. as part of the investigation.

Investigators now believe the car failed to negotiate a curve and crashed into a light pole.

The impact sent the car airborne and landed in a nearby grassy median, where it came to a final stop about 130 meters from where it left the road.

Calgary Police confirmed the road to X has reopened.

Det. Ryan Johnson originally said the area would open at 7 a.m., but that timeline has been pushed back.

According to him, one person who was in the driver's seat of the stolen car was taken to the hospital in serious condition, his life was in danger.

According to the investigator, the car was not tracked by the police at that time, and police officers were called only to go to the scene of the accident.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash, but speed is being investigated as a factor.
