A Montreal man has been charged with threatening to kill Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

A Montreal man is accused of making death threats to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on social media.

RCMP say they launched an investigation on Jan. 31 after 30-year-old Paul Clarisso “threatened to kill Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

The RCMP's Integrated Homeland Security Enforcement Team led the investigation.

Clarisso appeared in court in Montreal on Wednesday and is accused of making threats.

Police stress that threats to a person's sense of safety are taken seriously and that “statements of violence will not be tolerated.”

Under the Criminal Code, the maximum penalty for making a threat is five years in prison.
