Two kindergartens were evacuated after a gas leak on Montreal's south shore

Three city workers were injured and two kindergartens were evacuated on Wednesday after a gas leak on Montreal's south shore caused an explosion and set two cars on fire.

According to the Longueuil Police (SPAL), the injuries of the workers were minor and they were treated at the scene. There were no injuries among the 110 children or 30 residents who were evacuated.

According to Longueuil firefighters, an excavator and utility van caught fire and water mains were damaged.

Police said the fire broke out at 9:55 a.m. at Boulevard Cure-Poirier West and Rue Cartier.

Children attending the kindergartens Pierrot La Lune and Mon empreinte à moi have been transferred.

Police are advising residents to avoid the area and any parents with information can call SPAL at 450-463-7100 *4872.

Natural gas company Energir said the outage was caused by “a third party that reached the underground gas pipeline while digging”.

According to the company, technical crews are on site to seal the pipeline and shut off gas to the area. He said there was no migration of natural gas underground.

Electricity was cut off to consumers in the district, and dozens of natural gas consumers were affected.

The fire was extinguished after 13.00
