Protests against Alberta's transgender policy planned today

The backlash against the Alberta government's planned policies affecting trans children will take a new turn in the form of a walkout Wednesday.

Staged processions are expected to take place across the province starting at 10am, an idea that went viral last week.

According to Aspen Servo, he started planning immediately after the Prime Minister made the announcement.

The 16-year-old says he is doing it or his 13-year-old brother to show his support.

“My brother is trans, so I wanted to do something to show him support and support all my trans friends,” she said.

“It hurts when your parents tell you that you're not their child anymore, and then those who don't tell them fear that their parents might act the same way because of those reasons,” Cervo added.

The teenager explains that her brother, who had been waiting to participate in hormone therapy, now has to wait even longer to get the care he needs.

“She's been waiting two years for gender-affirming care, and this policy makes her wait until she's 16, when she's going to have to wait another two years,” Servo explained.

The 30-minute walkout may not only affect public schools — students at some universities also plan to participate.

The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) said in a statement to CityNews that students will be allowed to walk out of class, but it will be marked as an unexcused absence.

The Calgary Catholic School Division (CCSD) has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Since the Prime Minister doubled down on the policy, it has sparked a lot of debate in Ottawa.

On Tuesday, Conservative Leader Pierre Polievre said the feds should back off after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned Smith's plans.

“I think we have to trust parents — nobody cares more about their children than parents, and that's why Justin Trudeau needs to back off, he needs to let parents raise the kids and let the provinces run the schools and hospitals,” he said.

In Ottawa to open the new provincial office, Smith faced strong criticism, including protests against the proposed changes.

The Prime Minister plans to implement his plans in the fall.
