Toronto's BMO Field will be renamed for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Toronto's BMO Field will host six matches at the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup, although fans won't hear the stadium's official corporate sponsorship name once during the world's most-watched sporting tournament.

Toronto will host five group stage matches in the tournament, plus an additional Round of 32 match at the exhibition venue.

All eyes will be on Toronto during those matches, but the brand's corporate sponsor — banking titan BMO — will have no fanfare during the 2026 World Cup, as the stadium will temporarily change its name to comply with FIFA's strict intellectual property and corporate branding rules.

FIFA's list of venues for the upcoming tournament refers to the stadium by geographic location, currently referred to as Toronto Stadium on the tournament website.

The temporary loss of branding will be far from the biggest change coming to BMO Field for the 2026 World Cup. Although the stadium has a current capacity of less than 31,000, it will be expanded by adding temporary seating, bringing the facility up to FIFA standards of 45,000 seats.

The upcoming World Cup will not be the first rebranding of a stadium for an international sporting event.

For the U-20 World Cup hosted in the stadium's first year of operation in 2007, BMO Field was temporarily rebranded as the National Soccer Stadium before reverting to its corporate sponsor name after the event.

The venue was renamed the National Football Stadium again in 2014 when it hosted the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.

Most recently, BMO Field was named Temporary Exhibition Stadium — a nod to Toronto sports fans of a certain vintage — during the 2015 Pan Am Games, which was repurposed once the games were over.
