A Montreal man has been charged with threatening to kill Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau

United Nations: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned on Wednesday that the world is entering an “era of chaos” with a deeply divided Security Council unable to resolve major issues such as the Israel-Hamas war.
As the war in Gaza entered its fifth month on Wednesday, Guterres warned that if Israeli forces invaded the southern city of Rafah, it would “exponentially increase the humanitarian crisis with regional implications”.
Israeli forces launched an unprecedented offensive on October 7, displacing more than a million people to the south, carrying out a relentless bombardment and ground offensive in the Gaza Strip as part of a campaign to eliminate Hamas.
“The time has come for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the unconditional release of all hostages,” Guterres told the General Assembly in a speech outlining his priorities for 2024.
In his speech, he called for changes to the Security Council and the international financial system, among other reforms, citing his Future Summit in September as an important venue to address an already “deeper and more dangerous” dysfunction.
“The United Nations Security Council – the main platform for global peace issues – is riddled with geopolitical cracks,” said former Portuguese Prime Minister Guterres.
“This is not the first time the Council has split, but this is the worst. Today's dysfunction is deeper and more dangerous.”
Unlike during the Cold War, when “well-established mechanisms helped manage superpower relations,” this mechanism does not exist “in today's multipolar world,” he said.
“Our world is entering an era of chaos…, dangerous and unpredictable freedom for all, complete impunity,” he warned.
His words came amid devastating conflicts in Ukraine, Sudan, the Middle East and other countries, where millions of people have been left homeless and in need of aid.
“As conflicts escalate, global humanitarian needs are at an all-time high, but funding is not keeping pace,” Guterres said.
Against such a dark background, Guterres called on world leaders to use the “Summit of the Future” to be held in New York in September as part of the annual General Assembly to “build multilateralism for the years to come.”
In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, he again called for the development of an “emergency platform to improve the international response to complex global shocks”.
Guterres, who has made combating climate change a priority since taking office in 2017, reiterated that the crisis “remains the defining challenge of our time” and urged humanity to “make peace with the planet.”
He said, “Humanity has waged a war that we can only win: our war with nature. It's a crazy fight to choose.”
