A 112,000-pound piece of art has just been unveiled in Calgary, and it's big.

A large new piece of art has been placed in Calgary, adding another location to check out when the BMO Center expansion project is complete.

In time for its grand opening early next month, the 112,000-pound sculpture will be 70 feet tall and 45 feet wide and will be the focal point of the nearly 100,000-square-foot site.

It was completed by renowned international artist Jerry Juda, who has created numerous public artworks throughout his career, including large-scale works in the US, UK, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates.

“This monumental sculpture is a testament to the power of public art to build vibrant and inclusive communities and is one of the final construction phases before the BMO Center's grand opening on June 5,” said Claire LePan, Vice President of Communications and Strategic Affairs. Partnerships in Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) in a news release.

“The sculpture's grand scale and striking design captivate viewers, offering an immersive experience that resonates with the spirit of Calgary's stamp and Culture + Entertainment District.”

The corporation said the sculpture was painted with a custom mixed fluoropolymer blue coating and represents the power and vitality of water, representing its dynamic movement and fluidity.

Consisting of 211 vertical steel tubes ranging from 6.5 inches to 7 feet in diameter, the sculpture's innovative design consists of pure steel and air seamlessly integrated to create a visually stunning composition.

A grand opening for the BMO Center expansion is scheduled for June 5, followed by a public event on June 8.

The expansion will dazzle Calgarians when it opens with a massive new lighting installation earlier this year featuring a 170-foot curved roof.
