A man has died after an attack in Mackenzie Town

The Calgary Police Homicide Unit is investigating the suspicious death of a man in the southeast community of Mackenzie Town.

Officers were called to the 300 block of Prestwick Terrace SE around 8:25 a.m. Monday for a report of an assault.

When they arrived, they found a man dead.

The suspect fled the scene, but was located a short time later at the South Crossroads, Pancake and Breakfast House.

Dan Courtana, who eats breakfast with coworkers at the restaurant every week, says the suspect walked in, sat down at the table next to him, and ordered a coffee.

“It was a bit of a shock for a Monday morning meeting,” he said.

According to him, the police escorted everyone out of the restaurant as a precaution.

“We were all going out. He turned to one side and the officers came after him,” Kurtana said.

“He was quiet. He looked really unusual – he looked like he'd just rolled out of bed, his hair was weird.”

Police are not looking for other suspects.

Investigators believe the attack was targeted.

“The victim and suspect appear to know each other and there is no longer a threat to public safety,” said Duty Insp. Scott Campbell with the Calgary Police Service said Monday.

An autopsy will be scheduled at a later date to confirm the manner and cause of the victim's death.

Paulo Melo, who lives in the area, says he was shocked when he woke up on Monday to see the police on his street.

“A little too close for comfort,” he said.

He says he's lived in the area for more than 20 years and doesn't remember anything like this happening.

Blake Horner, who lives nearby, says the community is quiet.

“Someone had to die,” he said.

Lyle Cassas is with his parents and said police were on the scene quickly.

“I saw a police K-9 come with a siren, his lights on, fly here at 100 miles an hour and then turn around here,” he said.

“This is not a district. I mean, it's amazing.”
