Service is restored after vandalism left Calgary neighborhoods without television, internet or home phone service

The second outage in as many weeks left about 5,000 cable customers without TV, Internet or home phone service for several hours Tuesday.

Rogers Communications spokesman Cam Gordon said in a statement that the outage, first reported at 5:20 a.m., was the result of “a fiber cut caused by vandalism and theft of copper wire.”

In an update by 5pm, the company said all services had been fully restored.

The company apologized for the outage. It noted that vandal-related outages can take three to four times longer to repair than others, depending on the extent of the damage and associated maintenance.

Another incident earlier this month left about 15,000 Rogers/Shaw customers without service. Rogers completed the acquisition of Shaw Communications last year.

Communities affected by the shutdown included Balmoral, Brentwood, Bridgeland – Riverside, Capitol Hill, Charleswood, Collingwood, Crescent Heights, Hillhurst, Mayfair, Mountview, Mount Pleasant, North Haven, Renfrew, Rosemont, Sunnyside and Tuxedo Park.
