The Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humor will be presented on June 22

Two Calgary authors have been shortlisted for the 2024 Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour.

Ali Bryan's Cock, and DEborah Willis' Daughter on Mars two of the three finalists for the prestigious award. Patrick deWitt's The Librarian is also on the shortlist. The award, which comes with a $25,000 prize, is named after writer and humorist Stephen Leacock, who wrote such CanLit classics as “Sunny Sketches of a Small Town” in the early 20th century. The shortlist was announced on Tuesday, three weeks after the longlist of 11 books was announced.

The award will be presented on Saturday, June 22 at the Leacock Medal Gala in Toronto.

Bryan's Coq, published by Calgary's Freehand Books, is a tragicomedy about a family who embark on an ill-fated trip to Paris as a memorial to their mother. Brian first introduced his family in his 2013 debut, Rost.

Willis' “Mars Girl” is a satire about a woman who wins a chance to live on Mars through a reality TV show. It is published by Hamish Hamilton Canada, an imprint of Penguin Random House Canada. Willis is an editor at Freehand Books.
