The rooftop garden at Southcentre Mall will grow

Southcentre Mall will have a rooftop garden this summer to help feed Calgary's less fortunate.

The mall installed 100 planters last year and worked with urban farming company MicroHabitat to create a rooftop garden.

This year, officials say they will plant 50 more saplings in addition to the 50 in the shopping center.th anniversary.

The garden, which is not open to the public, will be installed on Wednesday and will again be managed by MicroHabitat.

Over 1,000 pounds of fruits, vegetables and herbs are grown throughout the summer, all of which are donated to Calgary's Made by Momma charity.

The charity is run by volunteers and provides practical peer-to-peer support to mothers and families in crisis.

“At its core, the organization is a food bank, but instead of just providing food, it prepares and distributes large batches of frozen meals at home to clients who are food insecure or unable to cook for their families,” explained Tuesday. news release.

“Rooftop Garden acts as a sustainable, local solution to help meet an urgent need in the city by providing Made by Momma kitchens with fresh produce, especially as food prices continue to rise.”

Created by Momma President Allison Palaszczuk, the organization says it is an honor to partner with Southcentre Mall on the garden project.

“This year, for Southcentre's 50th anniversary, by adding 50 more planters, we can give even more Calgarians access to healthy food in times of need,” he said.
