Market Mall brawl sends three people to hospital

One person was stabbed, three people were taken to hospital, including one in life-threatening condition, and four people were arrested during a fight at Calgary's Market Mall Friday afternoon.

Police were called to the mall at 2:30 p.m. for reports of a fight. They said when they arrived at the scene, they found the victim with serious injuries “consistent with a stab wound.”

Another victim was also injured during the fight.

EMS confirmed a total of three people were taken to the hospital, including one in life-threatening condition and two in non-life-threatening condition.

Police said the people involved in the fight knew each other and it was not a random attack.

During an interview Friday, Staff Sgt. Lon Brewster of the Calgary Police Service said two gangs were involved in the fight, but the incident was not gang-related.

“These were two opposing groups that had issues with each other, and they were trying to resolve it within the confines of the mall and not elsewhere,” Brewster said.

Four people were arrested, including one who required medical attention and was later taken to hospital.

Police believe everyone involved in the incident has been arrested.

The incident happened on Black Friday, a shopping day with hundreds of people at the mall.

Security teams and police taped off an area with blood spatter on the floor near the east entrance. The knife is also collected and placed in a plastic bag.

Officers were expected to be at the mall for several hours as they investigated.
