An election date has been set for the Winnipeg seat vacated by the former Manitoba premier

WINNIPEG – Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew has set a re-election date to fill the seat vacated by his predecessor.

Voters in the Winnipeg constituency of Tuxedo will head to the polls on Tuesday, June 18 to choose a candidate to replace former premier Heather Stefanson.

He stepped down on May 6, ending a 23-year political career that included just over two years as leader of the Progressive Conservative Party.

The seat of Tuxedo has historically been a stronghold of the Progressive Conservatives, but in last year's provincial election, the New Democrats won by 300 votes.

The results in Tuxedo were so close that Stefansson was declared the winner just two days after the election.

There are currently 34 New Democrats, 21 Progressive Conservatives, one Liberal and one vacancy in the Manitoba legislature.
