Calgary's annual community clean-up is underway

Calgary's annual Spring Community Cleanup is underway, saving community residents from going to the dump.

People in the north-west community of West Hillhurst came together on Sunday to throw unwanted items in the bin and instead take the unwanted rubbish to their local community association.

“That's why we're so fortunate to be partnering with the City of Calgary. They go to different community associations and offer to take the garbage out with trucks, which is amazing,” Susan Lenio, West Hillhusrt community manager, told CityNews.

“We fill two or three of these trucks at our event.”

Saturdays The weekend, which began on April 27-28, will be held in many areas of the city on Saturdays and Sundays. It will continue until the weekend of June 29-30.

City trucks will also come with crews to help, and funds will be provided to help with cleanup costs for each event. Acceptable waste is for residential purposes only.

For West Hillhurst, the Neighborhood Tree Thriving event took clothes to donate, drove bottles and even helped rid residents of their sports gear from the Calgary Flames.

“So we have cerebral palsy to accept gently used goods. We partnered with the Flames this year on sporting goods. We have bottle recycling, electronic recycling, household battery recycling, paper shredding and more. there is,” Lenio explained.

“Yes, we do a lot to divert a lot of waste to other areas and help with recycling.”

Communities that have had cleanups include Canyon Meadows, Bankview, Lake McKenzie, Bowness, Acadia, Crescent Heights and Bonavista.

Cambrian Heights, Signal Hill and Sherwood also had clean-ups on Sunday.
