Calgary-born Ben Lake will re-sign with the Belfast Giants

Ben Lake will join the Belfast giants in the 2024-25 season

Stena Line are delighted to announce that Belfast Giants have re-signed Ben Lake, 34, for the upcoming 2024/25 season.

The Calgary-born British dual international first arrived in Belfast in the 2019/20 season and has since made more than 250 appearances in all competitions across four seasons with the Giants.

Known for his passion and work ethic on the ice, the experienced forward has spent the past three seasons as one of the club's co-captains, establishing himself as a well-respected figure among fans and teammates.

Adam Keefe, head coach of the Belfast Giants, said: “Lake is a great player and an even better guy.

“It's hard to find players with his tenacity, determination and vision.

“During his time with the Giants, he has been a true all-around player who is comfortable playing anywhere on the ice, so we are very excited to have him back in blue next season.”

Before that, Lake gained experience with fellow Elite Hockey League (EIHL) Coventry Blaze and Manchester Storm, hitting the ice more than 140 times in total.

Before joining the EIHL, Lake played four seasons of NCAA hockey at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut, making more than 130 appearances for the Pioneers.

Lake then got his first taste of professional hockey before the 2015/16 season, signing with the Alaska Aces of the East Coast Hockey League, where he spent two seasons before moving up to the EIHL at the end of the 2016/17 campaign. .

Commenting on re-signing for the Belfast giants, Ben Lake said: “I'm really excited to be back in Belfast next season.

“My partner and I loved everything about the city and I can't say enough good things about the organization and of course the fan base.

“Adam (Keefe) and Steve (Thornton) seem to be building an exciting and experienced roster that can compete for every trophy, that's all you can do as a player.

“I look forward to the challenge of bringing back those trophies next season.”

Following his debut with Great Britain at the 2018/19 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship, Lake has represented the international side in a total of five tournaments.

In 2023, Lake played a key role in Team GB's campaign at the IIHF Group 1 World Championship, which saw the team win gold and secure a place at the 2024 World Championship, currently being held in the Czech Republic.
