KANSAS CITY, KC – The Kansas City Monarchs came from behind to defeat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 10-6 on Sunday afternoon at Legends Field.

Kansas City (6-3) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when designated hitter Blake Rutherford hit a two-run home run to right field.


Golden Eyes responded quickly, scoring three goals in the second period to take a 3-2 lead. First baseman Ryan Holgate tied the game with a double to right that scored shortstop Rob Emery and first baseman Joe Brusa. Third baseman Dayson Kroes then ripped a double over the wall in left-center field to drive in Holgate.

Winnipeg (3-7) added a third run on Emery's sacrifice bunt to left field that led off center fielder Myles Symington, and second baseman Keshawn Lynch extended its lead to three runs in the top of the fourth inning with a single. Left side of the field to bring on Andy Armstrong.

The Goldeneyes went up 6-2 in the fifth on Emery's solo home run to center field, his second of the season.

The Monarchs began to chip away at the deficit midway through the fifth inning as center fielder Travis Swaggerty singled right fielder Ross Adolph to right center to make it 6-3 Winnipeg.

First baseman Frankie Tostado's two-run home run to right in the sixth inning put Kansas City within one, and they tied the game in the seventh on Rutherford's sacrifice fly to left field, which brought in Josh Bissonnette.

The home team scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take control of the contest. A two-run home run by right catcher Hayden Jones made it 8-6 Monarchs, and singles by Swaggerty and Rutherford put the game within reach.

JC Case (W, 3-0), Kansas City's fourth pitcher on the afternoon, pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win. Tasker Strobel (L, 0-1) had a rough run, allowing four runs — all earned — on six hits in two-thirds of an inning.

The Goldeneyes' home opener at Blue Cross Park is Tuesday, May 21st at 6:30pm CDT against the Chicago Dogs. Colton Eastman (1-1, 2.70 ERA) starts for Winnipeg. Trevor Curl will have the pregame show at 6:00 on CJNU 93.7 FM and cjnu.ca. The game will also be streamed for free on AABaseball.TV.
