Calgary's Shakespeare Company returns with A Midsummer Night's Dream

Calgary's Ordinary Shakespeare Company is back with a new production of one of the Bard's most popular plays.

The Shakespeare Company has teamed up with Hit & Myth Productions to present A Midsummer Night's Dream in Calgary.

The comedy is a strange and magical love story set in an enchanted forest. It features mischievous fairies, delusional personalities, star-crossed lovers and a few silly actors in a play that tries to challenge those who see Shakespeare's plays as tragic.

“There are many reasons A Midsummer Night's Dream It remains one of Shakespeare's most popular plays. Written at the height of Shakespeare's powers as a romantic poet, this play lightens up layers of fantasy and comedy, which is truly astonishing when you consider that nothing like it has ever been written before. Nothing like it has been written since,” Richard Bohn, artistic producer of The Shakespeare Company, said in a media release.

“It's amazing to hear the play move so effortlessly across styles and genres, and when you give it to the team of actors, directors and designers we've assembled for this production, you can expect a performance. it goes up off the stage and into your heart,” added Bone.

The Shakespeare Company is teaming up with Hit & Myth Productions Artistic Director Joel Cochrane, who also stars as Oberon and Theseus in the show.

“I've always loved it A Midsummer Night's Dream and Hit & Myth Productions are thrilled to be a part of this collaboration,” said Cochrane.. “Fairies, magic, tumultuous passion and passion-inducing, unpredictable twists and turns – not just another Saturday night in Calgary!”

Edmonton's Ron Jenkins directs the production.


A Midsummer Night's Dream Runs through June 1 at Vertigo Studios in Calgary Tower.
