Winnipeg man arrested for felony, arson – Winnipeg Free Press

Winnipeg police have arrested a suspect who has been involved in several serious crimes in Winnipeg, including trying to run over innocent bystanders in a stolen car.

Officers arrested the suspect, a 29-year-old Winnipeg man, after the crash in the 200 block of Pembina Highway on May 16 shortly after 5 p.m. Investigators received multiple reports of a pickup truck carrying two passengers crashing into a light rail. On Sunday, the Winnipeg Police Department reported that passengers were seen setting fire to the interior of the vehicle.

“After leaving the idling vehicle, officers learned that the driver entered a nearby retail business, entered a restricted area and stole two wallets from an employee,” police said. “He continued to release the fire extinguisher inside the business before fleeing. Employees and patrons were not injured.”

Officers tracked the man to the 100 block of Lake Village Road and arrested him after a brief foot chase. The police seized a knife and a lighter as evidence from the suspect.

The passenger, a 29-year-old woman, was detained without incident in the rear lane in the 900 block of Chancellor Drive, police said.

Officers discovered a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado stolen from a Minnetonka residence on May 12. Police linked him to several additional incidents during the week and handed over the investigation to the Major Crimes Unit.

Hours before the car crash, at about 1:25 p.m., police said the suspect went to a music store in the 1800 block of Pembina Highway. After entering the business and “handling some equipment,” the 54-year-old man escorted her out, WPS said.

The suspect then stole the car and drove off, striking the employee with a parked car and forcing him to duck behind a utility pole to avoid being hit, police said. The employee was not injured.

Investigators say the suspect committed the same crime on May 14 around 7 a.m. when he entered a sports facility located in the 3900 block of Portage Avenue.

“As the employee was returning to the driveway, the suspect entered the stolen vehicle and drove toward the employee, which required him to jump out of the way of the vehicle and avoid being hit and injured,” police said.

Again, the man fled the scene before police arrived.
