Calgary police are searching for a driver involved in a fatal crash

The Calgary Police Traffic Unit is investigating a pedestrian who was struck and killed early Saturday morning in the southeast community of Forest Heights.

Calgary Police Service (CPS) said in a statement that a man in his 70s was crossing Memorial Drive and walking north on 47th Street in a marked crosswalk at 12:20 p.m.

At that time, the SUV was traveling eastbound on Memorial Drive and approaching SE 47th Street when it struck the man, who died at the scene, police said.

The driver fled before police arrived and continued eastbound before abandoning the vehicle, police said. Police found the car soon, but are still looking for the driver.

Police say excessive speed is being investigated as a factor in the crash.

CPS is asking anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have had a camera from the area at the time of the incident to call police at 403-266-1234.
