Winnipeg firefighters have been busy to kick off the May weekend

Winnipeg firefighters had to deal with several fires and gas leaks Friday night and Saturday morning.

The first incident happened in the 800 block of Henry Avenue on Friday just after 11:50 p.m.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) was called to a fire at a two-story industrial structure. Heavy smoke and flames were billowing from the building, and crews used aerial ladders to help put out the fire.

The fire was extinguished at 12:44

City officials said no one was in the building and no injuries were reported.

Speaking to CTV News early Saturday morning, the Winnipeg Police Department said fire investigators had been notified of a possible arson but had no other information.

The second fire broke out around 1 a.m. Saturday at a vacant industrial building on Sutherland Avenue.

The high-rise building, located between North Maple Street and North Argyle Street, required crews to use a drone to help locate hot spots. The fire was declared under control about an hour later, however WFPS was called back after another fire broke out shortly after 5am.

Crews launched a defensive attack and it was brought under control at 6:11 am

There were no injuries and both fires are under investigation.

The city authorities said that this building burned down after a fire in July 2023. It was considered a total loss, and there have been several “significant” fires since then.

The latest incident — a gas leak — happened around 4:20 a.m. Saturday. The leak was reported at a hotel in the 300 block of Fort Street.

Crews found a damaged gas line and evacuated about 40 people from the hotel. Manitoba Hydro was called to report the leak and allowed people inside once repairs were complete.
