The hospital's research center was evacuated while the Winnipeg police bomb squad removed the “volatile device.”

A research center at a Winnipeg hospital was evacuated as the police bomb squad helped dispose of a “flying object”. The police say that there is no danger to the residents.

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) confirmed that the bomb squad is at the St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre.

WPS told CTV News that the unit was “to assist in the removal of a volatile substance.”

Const. WPS public information officer Claude Chancey could not say what the volatile substance was. Police confirmed the incident was not believed to be bomb-related while the bomb squad responded.

“Everything is under control now. Everything is safe for the general public,” he said.

As a precaution, Chancey said the hospital's research center and adjacent MRI facility were evacuated.

“All operations at the hospital are continuing as normal and the general public is not at risk,” Chauncey told CTV News.

He said it was unclear how long the evacuation would take, but said police could be on the scene for some time as the bomb squad conducts “controlled material retrieval.”

“Because it's a potentially volatile substance, they take time,” Chancey said. “It's all done very methodically, so it's going to take some time. In the meantime, a decision will be made on how to dispose of it.”

Occupants of the building were evacuated as a precaution while police called in a controlled substance retrieval.

CTV News has reached out to the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority for more details.

This is an evolving story. One more time.
