Winnipeg woman raises more than $100,000 for Palliative Manitoba

Being active is an important part of Barbara Main's life.

“I'm not walking as fast as I used to, but I'm still walking and enjoying it,” Main told CTV News Winnipeg.

The 91-year-old also loves helping others.

“It's a community,” he explained. “It's a social thing and something I really enjoy.”

Every spring, Maine hits the pavement to raise money for Palliative Manitoba through the organization's Ride to Hospice program.

The nationwide charity event challenges people to walk, hike or walk from May 20-26. The annual event culminates with a special walk starting May 26 at Blue Cross Park.

Main first attended a hospice trip 20 years ago and after learning more about Palliative Care Manitoba, decided it was something she wanted to get involved with.

Each spring, Maine collects donations from former colleagues, neighbors and other community members. She also makes presentations about Palliative Manitoba for potential donors.

“Over the years it's added up – well over $100,000,” Mayne exclaimed.

Palliative Care Manitoba provides supportive services to people with life-limiting illnesses. It also shares resources and provides support for families, friends and carers.

“They help people live comfortably until the end and alleviate suffering,” Main said.

All money raised through the hospice trip helps fund Palliative Manitoba's volunteer visitor program.

“This applies to our bereavement and bereavement programs for adults as well as children and youth,” Jennifer Gurke, executive director of Palliative Care Manitoba, told CTV News.

Executive Director Jennifer Gurke said Maine not only raises money for non-profit organizations, but also raises awareness about quality end-of-life care in Manitoba.

“He's an inspiration to me,” Gurke said. “I mean, I wish I had her connections, I wish I had the mentality of 'Barbara needs to get out there and go hard.'”

Main credits her donor base for supporting Palliative Manitoba over the years and plans to continue to focus on its work.

“They have a palliative care team that offers compassion, understanding, and provides all the care and support you need,” Main said. “What is a slogan?” Helping you live today.”
