The Calgary Surge are making all the right moves in their inaugural season

The Calgary Surge have only just started playing in Canada's elite basketball league, but already the team is making a mark in the community.

The Surge is going the right way both on and off the field.

The team travels to communities and plays a winning brand of basketball.

And the start of the season is 3-1.

Forward Justin Jackson says he's not surprised by the hot start.

“I'm not too surprised,” Jackson said.

“I mean, we have a great team. I knew from the first practice that we were going to do great things. It's really about us now. We just have to follow what coach (Nelson Terroba) tells us to do.

“We have to respect the experience and do all the things that got us to this point and keep improving.”

SO FAR AWESOME

The city certainly embraced the Surge.

In their first game at Winsport, the Surge defeated the defending champion Edmonton Stingers in front of a packed crowd.

In the team's second home game, it drew nearly 2,500 fans in an exciting 85-82 win over Niagara.

Forward Deon Ejim says he's having a good time in Calgary

“I think the vibe was great and the fans were really behind us,” Ejim said.

“We're always trying to be great role models for kids growing up and we can see the connection to the community.

“A lot of them are asking who we are and seeing these big tall guys everywhere. It was a great vibe and we all enjoy it as a team and we want to win for Calgary.”

THE BIG CHALLENGE AGAINST BLACKJACKS

Next up: Ottawa BlackJacks at Winsport on Friday night.

Ottawa is also 3-1, so this will be a big challenge.

Jackson says he knows some of the players in Ottawa.

“I went to school with a few of the guys on the team in Ottawa, so it's always a good reunion when you catch up with old friends,” Jackson said.

“They're a really great team. They're also 3-1 and they've had a lot of great wins and they've got some great players, so it's going to be a battle.”

EGIM HAS A CALGARY CONNECTION

Ejim says he is familiar with Calgary.

His older sister, Yvonne, played high school basketball at Bishop Carroll High School and Edge School.

“I think he drew me to Calgary,” Ejim said.

“He told me a lot of good things about the city and I'm very happy to be here and really have his footing.

“It's been a great opportunity to be here and be around my family and just continue to grow and try to be a Calgarian one day.”

Ejim's sister now attends Gonzaga University.

Tip-off for Friday night's game between the Surge and BlackJacks is 7 p.m
