UVic president cites complaints about camp – Winnipeg Free Press

VICTORIA – The president of the University of Victoria says a pro-Palestinian protest camp on its campus is facing increasing complaints of harassment and intimidation, as well as illegal and “dangerous” activities.

Kevin Hall outlined the university's concerns in a statement Wednesday, saying they include what he described as increased acts of vandalism, misinformation and unauthorized use of buildings after hours.

Saanich police said they arrested a man Tuesday after allegedly threatening people at an academic center for local students.

Hall said the man was believed to have set up a tent on campus earlier in the week and “showed signs of substance use” that required a medical response from campus security and emergency first responders.

Hall's statement said the response was “impeded by the interference of camp members.”

Hall says he understands the encampment will include Victoria University students and is supported by some staff and faculty, but other participants are not members of the school community and organizers say it is “irresponsible” to encourage people not affiliated with the school to occupy the campus. .
