CMLC has more than $1 billion to complete and initiate major projects by 2024

CALGARY, ALTA. – With several major construction projects nearing completion, the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) is marking important milestones as it prepares for new work in 2024.

The BMO Center expansion and 17th Avenue expansion and Victoria Park/Stamped Station redevelopment projects are nearing completion, a late 2024 groundbreaking for the Arts Commons Transformation project is nearing completion, and procurement is underway for the new 6 St SE underpass, according to a CMLC release.

“2024 will be a big year for project completions and groundbreakings, as well as progress and development in downtown Calgary's east side. Our team is poised and ready to advance more than $1 billion in major vertical and infrastructure developments that will shape the city this year and lead the continued development and deployment of the East Village,” CMLC President and CEO Keith Thompson said in a statement.

CMLC is overseeing the development of several mixed-use housing projects in the East Village area in 2024, including OSA Development's Arris Residences, which will begin leasing in late 2023 for 337 units, and Alston Properties' EV606, which is under construction for 44 units and 9,000 units. sq. ft. of retail space on the main floor. The corporation has also signed letters of intent for three other development projects in the area.

CMLC is also developing the Arts Commons Transformation and Olympic Plaza Transformation projects in downtown Calgary and is preparing to unveil a new building design this spring for the Arts Commons Transformation project, which will include a 1,000-seat theater and a 200-seat studio theatre. Expecting that the foundation will be laid at the end of the year, the report said.

“In the Culture + Entertainment District (C+E), CMLC is preparing to bring over $600 million in major urban development projects to the finish line in 2024 in partnership with the Calgary Stampede and the City of Calgary. The BMO Center expansion will open for Stampede 2024, welcoming the world to Western Canada's largest convention center, and the Victoria Park/Stampede Station renovation and 17th Ave SE expansion projects will be completed this summer, creating a new gateway to Stampede Park for Calgarians and visitors alike.” in the message.

Also, works are being carried out on the project of the underground passage No. 6 No. SE. CMLC is the manager of the Rivers District Matters Plan, the release said, and the underpass falls under that mandate, which will result in the delivery of district infrastructure to support the Calgary Events Centre.

In 2019, the master plan of the Ozen district considers the underground passage as an important infrastructure connection to support the future development of the region.

Scoping work for the underpass has been completed in 2023, and CMLC will issue a progressive design-build order in the coming weeks to identify a project team to support design and construction. It is expected that the first works on the project will start in 2024.
