First look at the renderings of the Calgary Event Center this July – Calgary

Calgarians will have to wait a little longer to see, but the design for the city's event center should be unveiled to the public this summer.

“It's going as planned,” Ward 1 said. Sonya Sharp told reporters outside council chambers on Monday after a closed-door meeting with members of the event center committee.

“The momentum of this timeline has always come first, and we're right where we need to be on this project.”

Sharp, chairman of the event center committee, said the city hopes to issue development permits for the $1.2 billion project in July, and the design could be revealed soon after.

Sharp said he hopes the project will begin in August.

Sharp says he likes the new concept design more than the previous plans that were released in 2021.

“It's not an apples-to-apples comparison,” Sharp said of the new design.

“I look forward to hearing what Calgarians think. My personal opinion is that I like it better.”

The entire project is expected to cost $1.2 billion and will include improvements to the arena, public ice rink and public space around the Rivers District Event Center, as well as transportation and infrastructure improvements in the area.

According to the details of the last signed agreements, the project is scheduled to be completed on August 31, 2026. If all goes according to schedule, the Flames could play the 2026-27 season at the new arena.
