The Calgary Shaw outage was caused by an attempted copper wire theft

Some Shaw's customers in North Calgary experienced a service outage Monday after an attempted copper wire theft.

The company said the outage affected internet, TV and home phone services.

Several neighborhoods were affected, including Mount Pleasant, Tuxedo Park and Crescent Heights.

It also shut down internet and phone service for businesses along Kensington Road and 10th Street NW, forcing them to go cash only.

“Crews determined that the outage was due to a fiber cut caused by vandalism and copper wire theft,” Shaw said in a service update.

The problem was discovered around 4:20 a.m. Monday.

The company said repairs to the fiber network could take eight to 12 hours, but if the damage is extensive, it could take longer to fully restore services.

Just after 4 p.m., Shaw said technicians had begun work on “reconnecting the fiber” and would begin restoring services soon.

As of 8:16 p.m., Shaw/Rogers said “service has now been restored to half or more of the affected customers.”

In an emailed statement Monday, the Calgary Police Service (CPS) confirmed that it was called to the area of 12th Street and 25th Avenue NE at 10 a.m. on Monday morning for a copper wire theft.

Anyone with information about this theft is asked to call the CPS non-emergency line at 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Shaw customers can check their accounts on the My Shaw website or My Shaw app and look for an alert banner to determine if services are affected by the outage.
