1 person was killed in a shooting early Saturday morning in Northwest Calgary

Police are still investigating and searching for a suspect after a man was fatally shot near the front steps of a northwest Calgary home early Saturday morning.

Officers responded to the 1700 block of NW 18th Avenue around 3:50 a.m. for a report of a person in a medical emergency, police said in a news release Saturday.

Upon arrival, police officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The examination is scheduled for 9 am on Tuesday

Police say they are looking for an early 2000s red Pontiac Sunfire sedan that was seen in the area at the time.

SCARESTEST MOMENTS

A Capitol Hill neighborhood resident who didn't want to go on camera told CTV News it was one of the scariest moments they've ever experienced.

“We woke up in the middle of the night and heard loud screams outside, then we heard gunshots and went to the window,” the neighbor said.

“I looked out the window and saw a car driving down the street. It is very sad and shocking that someone died in our presence.”

A shooting was reported in the 1700 block of NW 18th Avenue just before 4 a.m.

The police covered the entire street with tape and marked the bullet points as evidence.

The body was taken away by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner as investigators photographed a large pool of blood visible on the front porch of one of the homes.

Tabby Goerlitz has lived in the area for more than 20 years and says she's concerned about drug trafficking and the homeless population nearby.

“I fear for my safety every day, the city in general seems to get scarier every time you turn,” he said.

“I have homeless people and suspicious people sitting in my seat and stalking us, so it doesn't surprise me. It's just something that's becoming a daily occurrence between here and North Hill Mall.”

Others, like Rishav Dalui, worry about the safety of their families.

“It was shocking to see the police taking the body away this morning. “I felt unsafe because I have a small child,” she said.

“I think there should be more police or some kind of security because there are a lot of kids in this neighborhood.”
