The Calgary Firefighters Toy Association gives back to children in need

About 3,500 gifts were handed out to Calgary children in need at the Telus Convention Center on Sunday.

It's all part of the Calgary Firefighters Toy Association's annual Christmas Party for Kids.

“I wish the event wasn't so successful because the more people there are, the more people in need,” said association president Mark Hagel.

“I've had emails over the years saying that this party has changed their lives. They understand that people care about them.”

This is about Frank Anderson and his family.

“Recently we had a tragedy in our lives and it was a huge breakthrough. It's great,” Anderson said.

The toys were donated by everyday Calgarians.

Active and retired firefighters also cover a significant portion of the cost of the event.

“Firefighters do an amazing job, but they often go on the worst day of people's lives. We want them to be a part of the best day of their lives,” Hagel said.

From festive performances to face painting and, of course, pictures with Santa, the event had something for everyone.

“I think it's really important to bring families together, families that are sometimes struggling, and have an opportunity for celebration and togetherness in our community,” Sam Michael said.

The Children's Christmas Party has been going for 55 years, and Hagel said it will continue for as long as it takes.
