“The time for half-measures on the climate crisis is over”

Ahead of this week's Climate Summit in Montreal, Dr. Mylene Drouin spoke about the need for radical urban action and unpopular solutions.

Ahead of this week's Climate Summit in Montreal, Dr. Mylene Drouin spoke to the media about the city's fight against the climate crisis. According to Drouin, half-measures and the notion that actions must be 100% socially acceptable should be abandoned in favor of radical actions that sometimes require “non-majority decisions.”

“The time for half-measures in the face of the climate crisis is over,” Drouin said. “The city needs to accelerate the pace of its actions to achieve greater sustainability rather than seeking social convenience at all costs.”

Drouin spoke about prioritizing greenhouse gas reductions, increasing the city's green roof, promoting public transit and active transportation, and protecting people most vulnerable to the effects of climate change (such as extreme heat and smog). He also quoted the WHO as saying: “Climate change is the biggest threat to humanity.

“The list of challenges for Montreal is long and time is running out,” Drouin said. “To make such important changes so quickly, because there is an urgency – everyone has to do their part.”
