Betty's Run for ALS is raising funds in Calgary and you can get involved too

If you have a sign, get ready, go … raise money for a good cause!

The 28th annual Betty's Run for ALS takes place June 9 at Glenmore Park North in Calgary, and you can walk or run to raise money for ALS research initiatives across Alberta.

For those who don't know, ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a neurogenerative disease that attacks the nerves responsible for sending messages to the brain. Over time, this affects a person's ability to move, swallow, and eventually breathe. Despite many advances over the years (who remembers the debilitating ALS ice bucket call?), there is currently no cure for ALS.

Nearly thirty years ago, Betty Norman set out on a quest to help cure the disease. Although he was fighting his own ALS, he worked tirelessly to make his fundraising vision a reality. In the nearly 30 years since, Betty's Run for ALS has raised more than $8.5 million for research, equipment and client support systems in the province of Alberta. Talk about a legacy!

Betty's Run for ALS benefits many people living with the disease, including this year's event ambassador, Dave McMaster. A natural athlete, McMaster first noticed signs of ALS when he began to slow down on the tennis court. A series of doctor visits and extensive testing led him to a diagnosis of ALS.
