A black bear sighting and park closure southwest of Calgary forces

A section of a southwest Calgary park and trail has been closed to the public after a black bear was spotted in the area.

Discovery Ridge Community said on its website that Alberta Fish and Wildlife has closed part of Griffith Woods Park, including some trails, because of a bear in the area.

“All Discovery Ridge residents are asked to help make this a success,” the association said, adding that there have been reports of bears accessing residential waste from trash cans stored outside homes but not secured.

“Do your part and make sure wildlife, especially bears, don't have access to the contents of your trash cans. This will be one of the main factors to protect residents and bears.”

Richard Putmans, a councilor in the area where the black bear was spotted, said on his X account that two bear traps had been set up to capture the animal and move it to safety.

“If you see a bear, please call 1-800-642-3800,” the statement said.
