Calgary Rogers service affected by attempted wiretapping

Some residents of north and northeast Calgary woke up Monday without internet, phone and other Rogers services due to what they say was vandalism and copper wire theft by the company.

The problem was identified on the company's support website at 4:30 a.m.

Suspecting that the thieves were trying to steal copper wire, crews eventually determined that the break was caused by a fiber that had been cut during an act of vandalism.

Repairing a damaged fiber line can typically take eight to 12 hours after technicians can safely begin work, Rogers said.

Updates posted on the company's website showed crews working to clean up the wreck before 11 a.m

“As outages of this magnitude take longer to repair, we will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available,” the statement said.

Customers are advised to check the website or app for the latest outage information.

Rogers is the parent company of CityNews660.
