The owner of the dog that fatally attacked a Calgary woman has been sentenced

A Calgary dog owner is set to go on trial Monday for a 2022 attack that killed an 86-year-old woman.

Denis Bagarich pleaded guilty to two city law charges, one count of animal causing serious injury to a person and one count of animal at large.

Betty Ann Williams, known to those who knew and loved her as “Rusty,” was mauled by three dogs in June 2022 while gardening in the driveway of her Capitol Hill home.

He waited 30 minutes for an ambulance to take him to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Williams' death sparked a flurry of criticism of Alberta Health Services (AHS), which later admitted the call was not life-threatening and was “categorized as police action” that delayed the arrival of an ambulance.

The Crown is seeking a $15,000 fine and a 10- to 15-year ban from owning animals.
