Climber killed in Kananaskis avalanche Saturday

A climber died after an avalanche hit Kananaskis Country Saturday afternoon.

According to Avalanche Canada, two climbers were caught in an avalanche at Ranger Creek in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park.

The climbers reportedly began their descent on foot from the base of the Lone Ranger Ice Peak when a wind slab hit them from above and swept the pair into a ravine below.

A wind slab is one or more layers of snow covered by the wind. This type of snow cover is often found on the sides of slopes.

Avalanche Canada said one person was partially buried and had dug himself out. The second climber was completely buried and died.

RCMP confirmed Sunday that rescuers found the 26-year-old woman on Saturday, but were unable to find the 29-year-old man she was climbing with.

His body was exhumed on Sunday and taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Police say the victim was from Squamish

Avalanche Canada said avalanches were common in the area Saturday and warned that similar events could occur Monday afternoon.
