Calgary Wranglers forfeit Game 2 due to controversial overtime

The Calgary Wranglers head to California 1-1 in their five-game series against the Coachella Valley Firebirds, coming off a 4-3 overtime loss.

After a relatively quiet first two periods offensively, the third period opened with five goals in total. By the end of the third period, both sides were tied at three apiece.

After several high quality chances from both sides, the Firebirds won it on a controversial goal by Devin Shore.

After that goal, the Wranglers were on the bench for a few moments because it was very close to being offside. After meeting for discussion, the referees confirmed the call to the ice. greatly upset the 6097 fans who came. While some took it differently, Wranglers head coach Trent Cull didn't have an issue with the decision.

“It was close there, it looked offside, I think we saw it, but the guys got their feet up, so I think the offside was good,” Cull said. “The player hit the puck behind the net, but I think it was a good goal. You can look at certain things in our league, if the puck crosses the line, it's hit, so there's not a lot of reviews. But I thought that was the goal. It's fine with me.”

Although many Wranglers players were visibly upset as they walked off the ice, cool heads prevailed as they spoke to the media.

“I'm not even sure,” captain Brett Sutter said when asked about the goal. “I didn't look at him. It doesn't matter either way. It was a tight game. There were calls throughout the night that could have gone either way.”

While the final result was disappointing, the Wranglers had some positives to take into Game 3, especially their best game. Jakob Pelletier, Matt Coronato and Cole Schwindt seemed to create chances almost every time they hit the ice. Schwindt was able to finish the game with two goals, giving him three goals in the postseason.

“I play with two great players. This is the future of Calgary hockey,” Schwindt said after the game. “Playing with Matty and Pelts, I have a lot of confidence in them and we'll try to keep things going.”

Playing on the road can be a daunting prospect for many teams, but the Wranglers don't seem to have a problem with it. Their 18-13-4 record away from the Saddledome has been even better, and they also managed to end their best-of-three series in the first round in Tucson last weekend against the Roadrunners. They hope to continue that tough road play in Game 3 on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
