A man is dead and another is in hospital after a shooting in downtown Calgary

The Calgary Police Service's homicide unit is investigating how two men came into contact after one was killed and another was sent to hospital after a shooting outside a downtown nightclub early Sunday morning.

Police were called to the Metropolitan Police Department at 2:45 a.m. for a report that someone had been shot outside a bar on Southwest 8th Avenue.

When police arrived, they found a man in his 30s in “severe medical distress.” He was taken to hospital with life-threatening conditions, where he died a short time later, police said in a press release.

While the man was being transported to the hospital, law enforcement officers guarded the scene and searched for the suspects. During the search, a second man in his 30s arrived at Foothills Medical Center with a gunshot wound, police said.

Calgary police officers were called to the hospital where they believe the man was involved in the shooting. He remains hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

“The investigation is very early and we are working to determine what happened and what contact the two men had,” police said in a statement.

The victim's identity will not be released until an autopsy is scheduled for early next week, police said. Details will be shared as they become available.

As of 10:45 a.m. Sunday, 8th Avenue Southwest, 5th Street Southwest and 6th Street Southwest were closed to traffic so police could continue their investigation.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call CPS' non-emergency line at 403-266-1234. Tips can be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
