Guhle scored in OT to lead the Canadiens to a 3-2 win over the Bruins

MONTREAL (AP) — Kayden Goulet scored an unassisted game-winner in overtime to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins on Saturday night.

“Like every team, you have some loose games, but ours is really good. When we're on top of it, we can beat any team in the league,” Goulet said.

Nick Suzuki and Brendan Gallagher scored as Montreal (7-5-2) beat Boston (11-1-2) for the first time since the 2019-2020 season.

“It's a team decision and a team effort to get back into the game and get something out of it,” Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis said. “You have to understand how to carry yourself on the ice every game to give yourself the best chance to win. It doesn't guarantee a win, but you understand what to do with and without the puck.”

Pavel Zacha took a pass from Charlie McAvoy past Montreal goaltender Samuel Montembo and into the top corner 36 seconds into the game to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. Montembo made 26 saves.

Montreal's best chance to equalize in the first period came when Sean Monaghan and Gallagher found themselves two-on-one, the latter hitting the post from a tight angle.

The Canadians scored two goals just 27 seconds apart in the first minute of the third period to take a 2-1 lead.

Suzuki's shot from the right flank tied them 24 seconds into the game. Gallagher jumped in the crease and scored Montreal's second goal 51 seconds into the game.

“It was a great 60 minutes. “We didn't score in the first two periods, but we just kept fighting,” said Suzuki. “They're a really hot team with really good players. “It's nice to see all the work you're doing being rewarded… I think we deserved this win.”

“I think the first two minutes were a microcosm of the two periods,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. “We're fortunate to be in the position we're in. We had players play well in moments, but for the majority it looked like that. it wasn't an individual thing, it was a team thing. So we have to look at what we're doing internally to rest and get energy for the games.”

Boston thought they had equalized when Oscar Steen deflected a shot from the spot. However, the goal was disallowed due to goalkeeper interference after Montreal contested the play.

After failing to score on a 5-on-3 power play, Brad Marchand put a loose puck in the back post and tied it at 2 with a power play goal. Jeremy Swaeman finished with 24 saves for the Bruins.
