A Montreal man faces charges for an online post targeting the prime minister

RCMP say a Montreal man is facing one count of threats after he allegedly threatened to kill Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in an online post.

Paul Clarissou, 30, will appear in court in Montreal on Wednesday, according to the federal police force.

The charge follows an investigation by the RCMP's Joint National Security Task Force.

The department launched an investigation on January 31 after the alleged comments were reported and charges were filed.

According to the police, the post was made on the accused's former Twitter account on Platform X.

The RCMP said in a statement that they take any threat to the safety of a person seriously, and that anyone who engages in such activity may be prosecuted and face significant penalties.
