Winnipeg police say they shot and killed a man Tuesday when they tried to arrest him under Manitoba's mental health act.

Police went to a home in the 200 block of Magnus Avenue Tuesday morning to take a man to the hospital for an involuntary medical check-up, but were met with resistance. Police say the suspect appeared angry and had a crowbar in his hand. As they approached him, he pulled the fire extinguisher out at them before retreating and shutting himself inside.

According to the police, since receiving the warrant on February 8, the police have encountered negative results in the arrest of the 59-year-old man.

Additional officers, including a tactical support team, arrived but were unable to extricate the man from the two-story home. They say he barricaded himself in a second-floor bedroom, leaving police with a second fire extinguisher.

The man eventually left the room and confronted the officers with a large edged weapon. Police shot the suspect and began administering emergency medical care, including chest compressions and a tourniquet.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died from his injuries.

The Manitoba Independent Investigations Unit has assumed responsibility for the investigation.
