Toronto police are warning about basement flood protection scams


Toronto police are warning residents about a new scam.

This time, people are trying to break into your home, claiming to be participating in the city's basement flood protection program.

Police say be careful when soliciting any services or sharing personal information with people you don't know. They do not conduct door-to-door sales of any kind and do not sell, affiliate or endorse any products or services.

Police also offer the following information to help determine if someone is in the city:

  • When carrying out construction/renovation work in neighboring areas, the City will send notices to affected households clearly specifying the purpose of the work and when work is required to enter homes/buildings and where work is not required.
  • Residents will be provided with contact information for the local supervisor/contractor and field ambassador when accessibility is required. Employees working for or on behalf of the city have ID.
  • Residents can call 311 with any questions or concerns, including verifying the identity of city employees or contractors.
