How Valentine's Day was celebrated in Calgary a century ago

Valentine's Day has been around for hundreds of years, so it's no surprise that even in the old days, there were many Valentine's Day celebrations in Calgary. We took a look back at the Calgary Daily Herald 100 years ago. To see how Calgarians celebrated February 14th a century ago.

For starters, many of the gifts local merchants advertised in their stores a century ago resembled the gifts we still buy each other on Valentine's Day: flowers, chocolates, candy, and cards.

In February of the 1920s, the Herald's social pages were filled with dozens of announcements of Valentine events and reports from parties large and small, including those taking place in private homes. These private party “fun” reports usually include a summary of the guest list, activities, food served, and decor. Large, public events on Valentine's Day include cabarets, recitals, dances, teas, concerts, and card game gatherings, especially whist.
