Montreal apartment fire sends one person to hospital

A 66-year-old man is in critical condition after a fire broke out in an apartment building in Montreal's La Petite Patrie neighborhood.

The Montreal Police Department (SPVM) says they received a call at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday from firefighters needing vehicle assistance at the scene of a fire on Avenue Christophe-Colombe near Bélanger Street.

Montreal police spokeswoman Jeanne Drouin said: “Firefighters have brought the fire under control, which started in an apartment building.” “A 66-year-old man was taken to the hospital in serious condition after being poisoned by smoke.”

Drouin noted that police are still waiting for an update on his condition.

Residents of 10 houses in the building were evacuated but “have just returned home,” he added.

A security perimeter was set up in the area to allow investigators to determine how the fire started, but it has since been lifted.
