Manitobans compete with the elite – Winnipeg Free Press

Noah Neves does not shy away from the challenge.

A Winnipeg teenager is taking on a lesser-known event this week as he prepares for one of the biggest track and field meets on the calendar.

Neves established himself as one of the nation's top high school athletes by dominating the 600-meter and 800-meter races, but will compete in the 400 meters at the Simplot Games on Thursday at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho.

She is one of four Manitobans making the trip, along with Winnipeg runner Annika De Smet (1600m) and sprinter Elijah Falade (60m) and Arborg high jumper Sydney Burak. The meet is one of the top sporting events in US track and field, with more than 2,000 athletes from around the world, many of whom have gone on to compete in the Olympics.

Neves, a Grade 12 student at St. Paul's High School, appreciates the appeal of the event; He won a bronze medal in the 800 meters last year.
