Can You Take Uber, Lyft This Valentine's Day? | News

Social media chatter suggests that drivers in several Canadian cities may join their U.S. counterparts in a Valentine's Day strike.

A US strike is said to be taking place in major US cities on Wednesday, February 14, as Uber, Lyft and DoorDash drivers fight for better wages.

On the Canadian side, a report from the advocacy group RideFairTO shows that ride-share drivers in Toronto earn an average of $6.37 an hour after expenses. The minimum wage in Ontario is $16.55 an hour.

RideFairTO said in an earlier post on Twitter X that drivers in three Canadian cities, including Toronto, would join the protest. The other two cities where protests are expected are Vancouver and Winnipeg.

A post on Gigworkers.ca says the protest will take place at Nathan Phillips Square at 9 a.m. and then move to Uber's Canadian headquarters on Bloor Street.

“Our primary exposure in Canada will be in Toronto, which is the largest ridesharing market in Canada and one of Uber's largest in the world,” the Gig Workers website says.

Uber Canada announced on Jan. 26 that it has reached a two-year agreement with UFCW Canada that will provide drivers with upfront fare and destination information, protect drivers from false charges and unfair ratings, seat belt reminders, ride recording and more. protects.
