Given the rising cost of car maintenance and gas, it's understandable that car sharing has become popular in Montreal.

Communato and the City of Montreal have unveiled plans to expand services this year to meet growing demand.

Based on the announcement, there will be more than 1,100 new Communauto cars across the city, as well as the addition of service in Lachine.

The new vehicles include 85 electric cars as well as 70 minivans.

According to Mayor Valerie Plante, each self-service vehicle replaces 7 to 11 vehicles.

Currently the total number of cars is 3700 – with the new cars the total will be 4800!
