The head coach of the Montreal Canadiens has been extended

The Montreal Canadiens announce that head coach Martin St. Louis has re-signed with the club to a contract extension. The club decided to exercise their option on his contract. He has one year left on his current contract and this extension will keep him until the end of the 2026-27 season. So far, many young forwards have thrived in their development under his tenure as the Habs bench boss. Keeping him around will not only boost the confidence of St.Louis, but also the young players under his wing.

Martin re-signed as head coach of the St. Louis Canadiens for two years

Since his arrival at the club, it has become clear that Montreal is going through a period of rebuilding. Therefore, the Canadiens were not a playoff team and this was reflected in St. Louis' coaching record. He has a 75-100-26 record since returning in February 2022. However, his success, professionalism and hard work were invaluable in other areas. See how the players have grown under him.

What did he mean to the Canadiens' young players?

Cole Caulfield is one name that speaks volumes about players who developed during St. Louis. Caufield played in all 82 games for the club this year, scoring 28 goals for 65 points. Captain Nick Suzuki has also had an excellent 2023-24 season and has really stepped up his offense as a classy two-way forward. Suzuki scored 77 points this year. Meanwhile, 2022 first overall draft pick Juraj Slafkovsky had a big season with 20 goals and 30 assists. Finally, another young forward to add to the list is none other than Newfoundland's Alex Newhook. With 34 points in 55 games, Newhook is beginning to find confidence and consistency in his offensive game at the NHL level.

Report: Montreal Canadiens sign Lane Hutson

Now, we have to remember that this is a rebuilding period in Montreal, and we're not talking about the other side of the puck. This is how to keep the puck out of the net. It's coming. Arber Hekage, Kayden Goulet and the NHL's newly signed Lane Hutson are among the names that have parts of the Canadiens. This extension will be great to see if St. Louis can turn this rebuilding club into a perennial playoff contender.
