Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter has been suspended by the NBA following a gambling investigation

Toronto Raptors point guard Jontay Porter was suspended by the NBA on Wednesday after the league found that the player disclosed confidential health information to certain sports bettors and bet more than $54,000 on league games.

The league opened an investigation into Porter's gambling allegations in March, focusing on his performance in the Jan. 26 and March 20 games. In both games, Porter played briefly before leaving, citing injury or illness. Porter played 4 minutes and 24 seconds in the first of those games against the Los Angeles Clippers and 2:43 in the second against Sacramento.

The investigation revealed that before the Raptors' March 20 game, Porter had placed an $80,000 bet on an online sportsbook to win $1.1 million, and that Porter would be the underdog. The man placed the bet only after Porter disclosed confidential health information, the league said.

“Due to the player's unusual betting behavior and actions, the $80,000 bid has been suspended and unpaid,” the league said Wednesday.

The investigation also found that between January and March 2024, Porter placed at least 13 bets ranging from $15 to $22,000 on NBA games using an online betting partner while traveling with the Raptors, or Raptors 905, the team's NBA G League affiliate. He bet a total of $54,094 and the total payout from those bets was $76,059.

“There is nothing more important to our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport than protecting the integrity of the NBA competition, and Jontay Porter's flagrant violation of our game rules will be met with the most severe punishment possible,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “While legal sports betting creates transparency that helps identify suspicious or unusual activity, this issue raises important questions about the adequacy of the regulatory framework currently in place, including the types of bets offered to our games and players.”

The Silver League said it would work with relevant stakeholders to “protect our league and our game”.

Porter has not commented since the investigation began and has never played for the Raptors — he missed all of Toronto's games for the rest of the season for personal reasons. Porter, 24, before the ban Brother of Denver forward Michael Porter, In 26 games, including five starts, he averaged 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists. The 6-foot-10 Porter also played in 11 games for Memphis during the 2020-21 season.

According to NBA rules, any player who “contributes money or anything of value to any game or event in the Association or the NBA G League” could face sanctions from Commissioner Adam Silver ranging from fines to “perpetual disqualification.”

Porter is the second player to be suspended from the Silver League for violating league rules. The other was former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling in 2014.

The NBA has had business relationships with gaming companies for years and lists FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings as official gaming partners. The league has relationships with at least 24 other gaming operators.
